The Cucumber Mojito
The Freshest Twist on a Classic (…According to Literally Everyone Except Joy)
Let’s set the record straight.
Joy does not drink cucumber cocktails.
Not “rarely.” Not “sometimes.”
Just… no.
Will she try a sip before judging? Sure.
Will she suddenly change her mind? Absolutely not.
A classic Mojito? Yes. Always.
Fresh mint, real lime, no pre-made mixes? Perfect. No notes.
But adding cucumber?
Straight to jail.
And yet… here we are.
Because while Joy stands firmly against cucumber in drinks, the rest of us have to admit something slightly annoying:
This Cucumber Mojito is ridiculously good.
What Is a Cucumber Mojito?
Think of it as a cool, modern upgrade to the classic Mojito.
You still get everything you love:
- Fresh mint
- Bright lime
- Light rum
- A touch of sweetness
- Refreshing soda
But with cucumber added for an extra layer of freshness.
And before Joy interrupts again, no, it does not taste like salad water.
It’s clean. Crisp. Subtle.
(Still not convincing her, but we tried.)
Why This Cocktail Works (Even If Joy Disagrees)
Here’s the thing.
Cucumber in cocktails isn’t about flavor dominance, it’s about texture and freshness.
It:
- Softens sharp citrus edges
- Enhances the cooling effect of mint
- Makes the drink feel lighter and more refreshing
So while Joy is firmly in her “absolutely not” era…
Everyone else is over here like:
“Wait… why is this so good??”
Ingredient Breakdown – What Goes Into a Great Cucumber Mojito
Cane Sugar – The Classic Mojito Sweetener
If you’ve ever had a truly great Mojito, chances are it didn’t come from a pre-made mix.
It came from real sugar.
We used cane sugar here, and honestly, it’s the gold standard for Mojitos. It brings a clean, natural sweetness and just a tiny bit of texture that helps during muddling.
Why it works so well:
- Dissolves gradually, creating balance instead of instant sweetness
- Enhances the mint and lime rather than overpowering them
- Keeps the drink feeling fresh and authentic
We did add a small touch of cane sugar syrup (like Monin) to smooth everything out, but the base? Always real sugar.
This is one of those details that separates a good Mojito from a great one.
Fresh Mint – The Soul of the Mojito
Mint is not just an ingredient here, it’s the identity of the drink.
When handled properly, it releases:
- Bright herbal freshness
- Cooling aroma
- That instantly recognizable Mojito vibe
The key word: gently.
Over-muddle it, and you’ll get bitterness. Treat it with a little respect, and it transforms the entire cocktail.
This is what makes people take that first sip and go:
“Okay… that’s fresh.”
Cucumber – The Controversial Guest
Ah yes. The moment we’ve all been waiting for.
Cucumber.
We used fresh cucumber slices to add:
- A clean, cooling note
- Extra freshness
- A slightly elevated, modern feel
Now, will Joy approve? No.
Will your guests love it? Very likely.
The important thing here is balance. The cucumber should support, not dominate. When done right, it blends into the drink rather than standing out.
(Still a no from Joy. Just documenting that again.)
White Rum – The Light, Tropical Backbone
A Mojito lives or dies by its rum.
We used Bacardi, which is a classic choice for a reason: it’s clean, light, and lets the fresh ingredients shine.
We also absolutely love Planteray 3 Stars Rum for this drink. It adds:
- A bit more depth
- Subtle tropical character
- Slight complexity without heaviness
Either way, the goal is the same:
Keep it light, smooth, and refreshing.
Cucumber Liqueur – The Flavor Enhancer
This is where the cucumber becomes more than just a garnish.
We used Bols Cucumber Liqueur, which:
- Boosts the cucumber flavor in a controlled way
- Adds a touch of sweetness
- Keeps the drink consistent every time
It turns the drink from “cucumber-adjacent” into a fully thought-out cocktail.
Without it, the drink is still good.
With it? It feels intentional.
Lime Juice – The Essential Freshness
Lime is the backbone of any Mojito variation.
It:
- Brightens the drink
- Balances the sweetness
- Keeps everything crisp and lively
Fresh lime juice is non-negotiable here.
This is what gives the drink its energy.
Soda Water – The Lift That Makes It Drinkable
Soda water might seem simple, but it’s doing important work.
It:
- Adds lightness
- Creates that refreshing sparkle
- Makes the drink sessionable
Any good-quality soda water works here, no need to overthink it.
It’s the final step that turns this into a proper highball-style refresher.
Flavor Profile – What Does a Cucumber Mojito Taste Like?
First Sip – Bright, Fresh, and Instantly Cooling
The first thing you notice is how refreshing this drink is.
Lime and mint hit immediately, followed by a subtle cooling effect from the cucumber. It feels light, crisp, and super clean.
It’s the kind of first sip that makes you go:
“Okay… that’s dangerously easy.”
Mid-Palate – Balanced Sweetness and Soft Herbal Notes
As the drink develops, the sweetness from the sugar and liqueur comes through.
You’ll notice:
- Gentle sweetness (not overpowering)
- Herbal freshness from the mint
- A smooth rum backbone holding everything together
The cucumber sits quietly in the background, rounding things out.
Finish – Crisp, Light, and Super Refreshing
The finish is what makes this drink shine.
It’s:
- Clean
- Slightly zesty
- Lightly sweet
- Refreshing enough to go straight back in for another sip
Nothing lingers too long. Nothing feels heavy.
This is a “one turns into three” kind of cocktail.
🍸 If You Love the Cucumber Mojito, Try These Next
One of the best things about building your home bar is discovering how one cocktail can lead you to ten new favorites. If the Cucumber Mojito sparked your curiosity (or controversy… looking at you, Joy 😏), there’s a whole world of refreshing, social, and flavor-packed drinks waiting for you.
Here are some of our favorite next picks, each with its own vibe, story, and moment to shine.
🌿 Classic Mojito – The Original Crowd Favorite

Before cucumber entered the chat, there was the classic Mojito and honestly, it still holds its ground.
Fresh mint, lime, sugar, white rum, and soda water create one of the most refreshing cocktails ever made.
It’s crisp, balanced, and incredibly satisfying when made properly (and not with pre-made mixes… we don’t do that here).
This is the drink Joy will happily accept. No cucumber drama, just pure mojito perfection.

🥒🍸 Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic – Where Cucumber Actually Belongs
Now THIS is where cucumber shines, and even Joy might slightly approve (maybe… on a good day).
Using Hendrick’s Gin paired with Fever-Tree Indian Tonic, this G&T leans into cucumber in the most natural way possible. Hendrick’s is literally built around cucumber and rose, so instead of feeling like an add-on, it feels intentional, elegant, and incredibly refreshing.
It’s floral, crisp, and just the right amount of fancy, the kind of drink that makes you feel like you’ve got your life together (even if you absolutely don’t).

🍓 Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri – The Party Starter
If your vibe is less “fresh and herbal” and more “give me something fun,” this one’s for you.
The Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri is bright, fruity, and unapologetically playful. It’s the kind of drink that instantly shifts the mood, especially at summer parties or sunny afternoons.
This frozen drink is very versatile! Whether you enjoy this daiquiri with brunch, a sunny summer afternoon or as a tasty dessert, it will be a match made in heaven.
Where the Cucumber Mojito is refreshing and crisp, this one is bold, sweet, and made for good times.

🍈 Melontini – Sweet, Smooth, and Easy-Drinking
For anyone who loves approachable, slightly sweeter cocktails, the Melontini is an easy win. It’s high in alcohol so it will absolutely get the job done but without the ‘taste’ of alcohol.
It’s smooth, fruity, and incredibly drinkable, perfect for guests who say things like “I don’t want to taste the alcohol” (we see you 👀).
It brings a completely different energy than the Mojito, but still fits perfectly into a social, fun night.
👉 Find the Melontini recipe here.
🌸 Pink Gin Rose Lemonade – Light, Floral & Social
This is one of those drinks that just feels like a good time.
Light, sparkling, slightly floral, and beautifully pink, the Pink Gin Rose Lemonade is perfect for brunches, garden parties, or any moment where the vibe matters just as much as the flavor.
If you enjoy the refreshing side of the Cucumber Mojito but want something a bit softer and more delicate, this is your next move.

🍊 Paloma – Citrus, Salt, and Serious Refreshment

If you love the refreshing, zesty side of a Mojito, the Paloma is a must-try.
With grapefruit, lime, and a touch of salt, this cocktail delivers a bright, slightly bitter, super refreshing experience that feels grown-up but still incredibly easy to drink. If you are a fan of margaritas or grapefruit (or tequila), you should absolutely try this one. The Paloma is one of our favourite summer drinks in our home bar!
It’s a great option when you want something refreshing, just without the mint or (thankfully, Joy would say) cucumber.
👉 Find the Paloma recipe here.
🍸 Espresso Martini – When the Night Needs Energy

Not every drink needs to be refreshing, sometimes you need something bold.
The Espresso Martini brings rich coffee flavor, smooth texture, and just enough kick to keep the night going.
It’s perfect as a late-night cocktail or after-dinner treat.
Very different from a Mojito, but equally essential in a well-rounded home bar.

The Cucumber Debate (We Had to Address It)
At Worthington’s Bar, we believe in honesty.
So here it is:
- Team Joy: “Cucumber in drinks is a crime.”
- Team Everyone Else: “This is the most refreshing thing ever.”
And honestly? Both can exist.
Because that’s the beauty of cocktails.
You don’t have to love everything.
But you should always try it once.
(Just don’t expect Joy to order a second round.)

Final Thoughts – A Divisive Drink That Still Deserves a Spot
This might be one of the most controversial drinks in our home bar.
Not because it’s bad…
But because it challenges opinions.
It’s fresh, crisp, and incredibly well-balanced.
It looks amazing.
It’s perfect for summer.
And it has officially been rejected by Joy.
So here’s our recommendation:
Make it.
Try it.
Pick your side.
Are you Team Refreshing Cucumber Mojito…
or Team “keep that vegetable out of my drink”?
Either way, we’ll be behind the bar,
one of us happily sipping this…
…and one of us ordering a classic Mojito instead.
FAQ – Cucumber Mojito
Does a Cucumber Mojito taste strongly like cucumber?
No. When balanced properly, cucumber adds freshness rather than a strong flavor. It’s subtle and blends into the drink.
(Still not enough to convince Joy.)
Can I make this without cucumber liqueur?
Yes. You can rely on fresh cucumber alone, but the flavor will be lighter and less pronounced.
What rum is best for a Mojito?
A light white rum works best. Bacardi is a classic choice, while Planteray 3 Stars Rum adds a bit more depth.
Can I use regular sugar instead of cane sugar?
You can, but cane sugar gives a more authentic Mojito experience and slightly better texture during muddling.
Is this drink very sweet?
No. It’s balanced. The lime and soda water keep it fresh and prevent it from becoming overly sweet.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Absolutely. Skip the rum and liqueur, add extra cucumber, mint, lime, and soda water for a refreshing mocktail.
What’s the difference between a classic Mojito and a Cucumber Mojito?
A classic Mojito focuses on mint and lime, while the cucumber version adds an extra layer of cooling freshness and a slightly more modern flavor profile.
