Irish Coffee

A Toast to Tradition and Warmth!

Welcome to the heartwarming tale of Irish Coffee—a delightful concoction that combines the best of Ireland’s spirits and the comforting warmth of a well-brewed cup. We’ve been making Irish Coffees long before we started Worthington’s Bar for grandpa. Last year, we went on a roadtrip in Ireland and we had our first ‘real’ Award-winning Irish Coffee in Ireland. A Historical Toast: Unveiling the Birthplace of Irish Coffee

Our journey begins in the picturesque village of Foynes, Ireland, on a chilly winter night in the 1940s. The enchanting tale of Irish Coffee began at Foynes airport, a bustling hub of transatlantic aviation. In this historical toast, we peel back the layers of time to reveal the very birthplace of this iconic beverage and the captivating atmosphere that surrounded it.

Picture the weary travelers, arriving after long transatlantic flights, seeking refuge from the biting Irish cold. The ambiance at Foynes airport, filled with a mix of anticipation and weariness, set the stage for a serendipitous creation that would soon become a symbol of Irish warmth and hospitality.

As the wind whistled outside, passengers huddled in the comfort of the Foynes terminal, yearning for something to thaw their chilled spirits. It was in this moment that the head chef, Joe Sheridan, crafted a concoction that transcended the boundaries of a typical drink. He combined piping hot coffee, a generous pour of Irish whiskey, a touch of sugar, and crowned it all with a dollop of freshly whipped cream.

The first sip of this warm elixir sent waves of comfort through the travelers, turning a routine airport stop into a memorable experience. Word of this delightful creation spread, and soon, Irish Coffee became synonymous with the welcoming embrace of Irish hospitality.

Foynes airport, with its tales of adventure, romance, and camaraderie, became the unexpected stage for the introduction of a beverage that would traverse oceans and stand the test of time. Today, as we raise our mugs in a historical toast, let’s pay homage to the spirited travelers, the cozy ambiance, and the inventive genius of Joe Sheridan, whose creation continues to unite coffee and whiskey enthusiasts worldwide.

Ingredients for a Classic Irish Hug

The magic of Irish Coffee lies in its simplicity. All you need is freshly brewed hot coffee, a generous splash of Irish whiskey, and a dollop of thick cream. The key is to balance the rich, robust coffee with the smooth warmth of the whiskey, creating a soothing elixir that warms you from the inside out.

The Perfect Pour

Brew a strong cup of your favorite coffee, ensuring its robust flavor can stand up to the boldness of Irish whiskey. Add a shot (or two!) of your preferred Irish whiskey—the soul of this magical potion. Sweeten it if you wish, and then gently float a layer of cream on top. The cream isn’t just a garnish; it’s a velvety barrier that ensures each sip is a harmonious blend of flavors.

A Sip Through Time

The beauty of Irish Coffee lies in its adaptability. Feel free to experiment—add a sprinkle of cinnamon or chocolate shavings, try different Irish whiskey brands, or even explore flavored creamers. Make it your own, and let each personalized pour be a reflection of your taste and style.
